“The best of
all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.”
Burton Hills
Origins of the Christmas
Tree
It's a little know fact that the Christmas tree
actually pre-dates Christmas! To the Vikings, the fir symbolised spring, and brought hope for better times after
the bitterness of winter. Druids worshipped the fir as a manifestation of the gods. These trees kept their
colour when all other flora had died back and, to the Druids, represented eternal life. The Pagans were the
first to decorate and bring trees indoors - as an invitation to the fairies come into their homes and join in
the celebrations!
Indoor artificial Christmas trees, as we know them,
originated in Germany. They were introduced to the United States by early German settlers. The first Christmas
tree in the United Kingdom is believed to have been brought by Prince Albert, beloved husband of Queen Victoria,
in the 1840s. A photograph of the Royal Family standing in front of the resplendent Christmas tree, decorated
with candles, sweets and gingerbread, was printed in London Illustrated News. Even in black and white, the photo
must have impressed; the Christmas tree took the country by storm. Traditionally, the Christmas tree was not put
up until Christmas Eve, and was taken out down on 6th January, known as Twelfth Night. Nowadays, however, many
Christmas trees go up as early as the first or second week of December. Bringing a real fir indoors so early
would result in a carpet full of needles and bare branches by Christmas day. Enter imitation Christmas
trees. Fake Christmas trees have become increasingly popular over the years. They look fab and are
convenient too. With a decent real tree costing upwards of £40, artificial trees are the shrewd, one-off
purchase that will see you through several Christmases to come. They look unbelievably lifelike these
days. Prelit models are a wonderful innovation, allowing you to have your tree up and going in less than
an hour.
“Never worry about the size of your Christmas
tree. In the eyes of children, they are all 30 feet tall.”
Larry Wilde
The Benefits of an Artificial
Tree
Artificial trees do not shed their needles, or get
sap on your clothes. They don't need to be watered and will retain their beauty not just through the festive
season, but for many years to come. Artificial trees are not only convenient and environmentally sound, but are
safer too. As a natural Christmas tree dries out, the tiniest spark from fairy lights could create a fire
hazard. A good quality artificial xmas tree is made from fire-retardant polyvinyl making it a much safer
option.
Another benefit of the artificial tree is you are
not restricted by nature. There's a huge range available varying greatly in size, shape and colour. You may love
the look of a natural Christmas tree, but not have the space. A real spruce can be surprisingly wide, and the
modern sitting room may not offer much leeway. If this is the case, a slimline artificial tree may be the answer
for you. Today, Christmas tree manufacturers are so adept it can be very difficult indeed to distinguish between
artificial and real. Perhaps you're after a more contemporary look and want to match the Christmas tree to your
décor? There are a myriad of colours out there and the opportunities are endless. Looking for an ultra modern
style? Fibre optic may be your Christmas tree of choice. Tired of getting yourself in a ravel trying to untangle
the fairy lights? Decorating your Christmas tree should be a pleasure, not a pain! There are many pre-lit
Christmas trees to choose from.
“Thousands of lights were burning on the green
branches, and gaily-coloured pictures, such as she had seen in the shop-windows, looked down upon her. The
little maiden stretched out her hands towards them when the match went out. The lights of the Christmas tree
rose higher and higher, she saw them now as stars in heaven...”
Hans Christian Andersen
Step-by-Step Guide to Decorating Your Tree
1. Lights
You'll want to test these first! There's nothing
worse than finding they don't work when you've spent ages winding them around the Christmas tree! Make sure you
leave enough lead to reach the plug socket, and start at the bottom. When buying Christmas lights, remember: the
more the merrier! You'll be surprised how quickly a 3 metre string of lights will disappear and leave you with a
sorry looking Christmas tree. So really, the longer the string of lights you buy, the better the effect you'll
get on the tree. Of course, a pre-lit artificial tree is the perfect solution as all the hard work is done for
you! If your lights come separately, circle them around the tree working from the bottom to the top. Remember,
the Christmas tree narrows as you go up so you'll want to use more lights at the bottom, but make sure you have
enough slack for the last light to get to the top of the tree to light up your star or angel.
2. Tinsel or Beads
If you're using tinsel or beads, now is the time
to put them up. Just work your way around the Christmas tree in the same way as you placed the lights. Tinsel
and beads can be handy in hiding any unsightly wires from the lights.
3. Baubles
When hanging baubles, it's always best to make
sure those of the same design are evenly distributed across the Christmas tree. Large baubles are placed at the
bottom to mid levels, and smaller, mid to top.
All the best dressed Christmas trees have one
thing in common: colour co-ordination. Whether it's red and gold, silver and blue, bronzes and golds or good
old-fashioned primary and secondary colours, colour co-ordination is key.
4. Fairy or Star
Add your fairy or star - the icing on the
Christmas cake! And that's it, you're done! Remember, the great thing about an artificial xmas tree is, no
needles, no watering, no fuss - what you see is exactly what you'll get, all Christmas time long!
